Boy plucked from cliff face
PA Invercargill An Invercargill youth was rescued by helicopter from high on a cliff face above the Arrow River, near Arrowtown on Saturday afternoon. He is Richard Gaines, aged 14, who got into difficulties on a rocky face about 85m above the river. A helicopter from Alpine Helicopters, Ltd, flew the company’s general manager (Mr D. Spary) and a policeman to the base of the cliff where the boy was stranded.
Mr Spary got into a scoop | net which was attached to the helicopter by a long cable. The helicopter then lifted him up to the ooy, who was plucked off the cliff into the scoop net, and brought the pair down to the riverbed below.
