Addington Market Store cattle in steady demand
With a continuation of mild conditions, the autumn store cattle selling season closed at the Addington Market yesterday on a satisfactory level. Generally it was a buyers’ market, but with the winter still ahead, that is usually the case at this time of the year. The sale drew a large entry — 1300 calves and 1050 older cattle — and quality was often very rough and plain. I For this stage of the season j the calf entry was surprisingly I large. In addition to calves from | the usual annual vendors, there i was a good consignment from Kurow. Very few large calves were included, but there was a lair selection of good average calves and. again, a large proportion of very plain and hard-done calves. Steer calves sold to $9l, but on the day there was only an occasional sale at $6O or better. Good medium steer calves sold at $37 to $45, with smaller at $3O to $35, and tail-end lots down to $l3. The good medium class of calf continued to draw fair competition, but the smaller calves ijsusally met a depressed sale. The heifer calf market, slipped on recent rates, largely- because inquiry is dwindling. ThePe was one sale of some Ahgus-Here-ford-cross at $5O but. as usual, it tdok a good, heifer to neach $4O. Good average heifers sold at $32 to $36, with smaller at $24 to $2B. and tail-end lots down to $l4. Sales of store calves included:— Steers. — A. H. and B. J. Green (Hamner Springs), 56 Hereford and Hereford-Angus cross at $29 to $5O; A. M. Deans (Cheviot), 51 Herefords at $32 to $53; Otahuna Farm (Tai Tapu), 14 Herefords at $42, 19 Angus-cross at $4l; B. d Mcllraith and Company (Kurow). e 39 Herefords al $32; A. J. Duncan e (Springfield), 14 Angus at $3B. ADULT CATTLE . Adult cattle sold on a buyer’s q market, but for this stage of the lt year the sale was regarded as 1 satisfactory. _ The yarding was poorer than last week, and one of the plaiy! nest seen at Addington for years. 0 No doubt, in most instances, this n; was a reflection of the hard sumv mer that most cattle had gone e i There were no cattle to be n i compared with the forward lots seen last week. Virtually all were, ,1a wintering-over proposition. Values were much in line with' s' those of last sale; however, dejjmand was often better, and it again came from widespread ~ i areas, with West Coast buyers again active. Ji The top price of the section was $l4l for the tops of a line of l [adult Angus steers; best 20-
’ month-old steers sold to Sl3O, ! otherwise, in this class of yard- . ing, there were not many sales s at more than $lOO. The bulk of the 20-month-old j cattle sold at $65 to $B5, with a small and very backward down " to $5O. Heifers sold mainly at $5O . to $65, but there was one sale of L 2|-veaf-olds at $92. Sales of adult store cattle inj eluded:— Steers (20-month-old unless otherwise stated). — Birch Hill . (Okuku), 32 Angus-cross at $67 to $81; D. G.
