New theatres preferred

Plans to spend about SIM to improve operating theatres at the Christchurch i Hospital have been dropped in favour of a proposal to include them in a new building. The Hospital Board expects planning and construction of a new suite of operating theatres and related services such as a

[pathology laboratory and a (central sterilising unit to (take more than six years. No estimate of cost is available but it may exceed S6M, depending on how many new theatres are planned to replace the four operating theatres now in use. Maintenance programmes will continue on existing theatres to keep them up to [standard.

The decision not to proceed with the plans to improve existing operating theatres is the result of opposition to the proposal from surgeons and anaesthetists at the hospital. They want new theatres and related services to be included in the S6OM redevelopment plan for the hospital.
