Opposition fails to force vote
i PA Wellington J The Opposition failed yesterday in a bid to force a vote of no confidence in the Government. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Rowling) moved that Parliament advise the Governor-General (Sir Keith Holyoake) in its Address-in-Reply to the Speech from the ■Throne that “the Government has forfeited the confidence of this House and the country.” However, the motion was defeated on a 23-39 division. The leader of the Social Credit Political League (Mr Beetham) abstained from voting on the motion. He told the House later that he had made it clear during the Rangitikei byelection campaign, that if he became a member of Parliament he would abstain on votes of confidence.
