Labour loses place

PA Wellington The Government used its majority in Parliament yesterday to put the leader of the Social Credit Party (Mr B. C. Beetham) on the Statutes Revision Committee, in place of a Labour member.

It defeated a Labour amendment which would have given the Government an extra member on the committee, while giving Mr Beetham a place and keeping the same number of Labour members. The Labour amendment was defeated by 43 votes to 25. with Mr Beetham and Mr J. G. O’Brien (Ind., Island Bay) voting with the Opposition.

Mr G. P. A. Downie (Ind., Pakuranga) voted with the Government. The Government has six members on the Statutes Revision Committee and the Opposition, four.
