Waipara sect’s plans
Members of the Full Gospel Mission hope to combine religion, recreation, and farming on their 40 ha property at Waipara. The leader of the sect, Douglas Alexander Metcalf, has made application to the Hurunui County Council for consent to conditional use and/or specified departure to permit the use of the property as a residence, farm, and centre of worship. An advertisement stating the objects of the application and that persons have until June 20 to object to it also says that the property would be used for religious' education and recreation for members from “time to time.” The notice of application says that the sect wants permission to include a family residence on the property, men’s and women’s bunkhouses, a caravan park and assembly hall, a place of worship, a rifle range, a swimming pool and farm buildings.
