March Legend gets light workout
NZPA Brisbane The New Zealand sprinter March Legend, now 3 to 1 favourite for the Stradbroke Handicap (1400 m at Eagle Farm on Saturday, was given an easy track workout yesterday morning. March Legend, brilliant winner of last Saturday’s 1350 m Delaney Handicap, was ridden by Roger Lang in two circuits at an easy pace on the inside grass. His owner-trainer Don Nash revealed after the workout that March Legend had a bone chip removed from his off knee when a two-year-old. “Ever since March Legend has had a rather awkward walking action but I can assure everyone that there is nothing wrong with him,” a delighted Nash told reporters. Meanwhile Roger Lang, who rode the dashing sprinter overweight in the Delaney. said he was confident of making the handicap
weight of 55.5 kg this weekend. “At the most I may be .skg over,’’ he said. Another top New Zealand sprinter and one-time favourite, Silver Wraith, was a noted absentee from the Silver Wraith broke down on Monday and has been named a non-runner in the Stradbroke Handicap. The sprinter has injured his near-side stifle. His trainer, Chris Sims, who stables Silver Wraith at Southport, told reporters that the horse was still under veterinary treatment. “He’s making steady improvement and we’re hoping he’ll run in the Healy Stakes at Eagle Farm on June 24 as a lead up to the Rothmans Hundred Thousand at Doomben in July.” The Brisbane Cup favourite Hyperno turned in a slashing Cup trial with his effort in defeating Hyatt by a length at the end of 1600 m in Irnin 47.75.
