Chiefy selected for first leg at Pukekohe

Special correspondent Auckland Chiefy realised some of the hopes held for him as a middle-distance runner when he took a 2000 m event at Ruakaka last Friday and he promises to get 2200 m sufficiently well to win or run close in the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Pukekohe today.

A three-year-old colt by Indian Order from Miss Conduct, Chiefy won a maiden sprint at Te Rapa last August. The success at Ruakaka was his only one meanwhile but it has to be said that he was not tried much between times. Two starts before he was taken north he finished fifth over 1600 m at Te Awamutu, running on promisingly. His first win came on a heavy track and it seems likely he will improve further as the ground softens again. The hardest for Chiefy to beat in the Pukekohe Handicap, for classes four and five, will probably be Top Decision, which ran him so close at Ruakaka. Kelly the Second, Bellemar and Dainty Oak. From the weights at Ruakaka, Chiefy is up Ikg in the Pukekohe Handicap and Top Decision is down Ikg. There was hardly anything between them at the Whangarei meeting, Chiefy getting the upper hand right at the finish. Top Decision has weighedin at six of his last seven attempts and with a first and two second placings in his last three must be rated a three-ypar-old of very considerable ability. He is another of the team with which D. J. O’Sullivan has done so well this season. Kelly the Second usually runs on strongly and there has been plenty of promise i i the latest efforts of Bellemar, second at Te Rapa on May 20. and Dainty Oak, second at Rotorua last Saturday. Innes Lad, such a good galloper last winter, could be worth attention in the second leg, the Grand Prix Handicap, a 1200 m event for class four and five. He would be the better, certainly for some softening of the ground but at this early stage <f a new campaign he might not be too much troubled by the unseasonal quite firm footing. Legastaan has the pace to be prominent, and a background of sound form. If Silent Memory is in forward condition after her spell from racing she could well beat them all.
