There seem to be places for the “do-it-yourselfer” [among Volunteer Service Abroad recruits this year. The service’s public affairs officer (Mr Clive Conland) [said in Christchurch that ! several Western Pacific countries needed persons with : general mechanical and building skills which they [could pass on. Mr Conland said there ; were tremendous opportunities opening for New Zealand with the forthcoming independence of some of the [ Western Pacific countries, such as the Solomons and the New Hebrides. “Formerly they looked forwards distant colonial powers ! for guidance, but now these! countries will look to New! Zealand.” he said.
