Roller skaters perform well
The efforts of Peter Maxwell, his sister Maree, and Christine Rowe at the world track speed roller skating championships in Argentina have endorsed New Zealand’s high standing in international competition. Miss Maxwell (Masterton) was second in the twowoman sprint, third over 5000 m and finished sixth in both the 3000 m and time trial. Her brother crossed the line in third place over 20,000 m in the men’s race, but was relegated to fourth
because he had been pushed over the line.
The president of the New Zealand Federation (Mr H. A. Allchurch) said that the experienced Mrs Rowe, of Hastings, finished fourth in two races, but he did not know in which events. Telephone conversation with the team’s manager had been di* fficult. , goccer.—The Spanish first division side, Barcelona, beet Ajax, of Amsteedam, 3-1, In a special friendly match to mark the retirement of their famous Dutch international, Johan Cruyff. Cruyff joined Barcelona from Ajax five years ago. He played 239 games for the Spanish side.
