Kwok top in snooker
Dale Kwok (Otago) beat Dave Meredith (Canterbury), 11 frames to six, in a special snooker match at Oamaru over the week-end to decide the New Zealand rankings for the world amateur championship in Malta later this year. The match was played on a best-of-21-frames basis. Meredith is the current New Zealand snooker champion, although Kwok has held the title. Kwok is now assured of representing this country in Malta, and Meredith’s participation will depend on two New Zealanders being accepted, and Meredith will have to meet some of his expenses.
Meredith, who never found his best form, began badly, and was 3-0 down after the first three frames on Friday night. He recovered to 3-3 but trailed, 3-4 after the first session.
Meredith won the first two frames on Saturday to go into the lead, 5-4. However, Kwok took the next six frames, and Meredith had to pot the pink and the black to win the sixteenth.
Kwok, who has still lost to Meredith more times than he has beaten him, reached the target of 11 frames when he potted a respotted black in a tense seventeenth frame.
