Balance-of-payments deficit of $13M

PA Wellington The balance-of-payments estimate . for the March, 1978, quarter shows a deficit on current account of SI3M states the Government Statistician (Mr E. A. Harris). This compares with a deficit of $275M for the December, 1977, quarter, and a deficit of SI4BM for the March, 1977 quarter. For the year ended March 31, 1978, the deficit on current account was SBIOM compared with $946M for the twelve months ended December 3, 1977, and SB43M for the twelve months ended March 31, 1977. The estimates are preliminary only. During the nine months ended March, 1978, the

c.i.f. value (cost including insurance and freight) of imports was $2,453.9M said the Government Statistician. Of this amount, goods valued at: 5565.6 M (23.0 per cent) were imported under licence; $1731.3M (70.6 per cent were exempt from licence: 5147.7 M (6.0 per cent) were Government imports; $9.3M (0.4 per cent) came in under no remittance schemes. For the same period in 1977, the respective proportions of the $2563.6M imported were: 23.3 per cent; 68.3 per cent; 5.6 per cent; And 2.8 per cent.
