Trade with Japan
Sir, — News, trade, and political observers, as well as Opposition members of Parliament, including Mr Rowling, have poured scorn and pessimism, on the Government’s statement of a possible breakthrough in trade relations with Japan. The article (May 25) presents no evidence of a failure by Mr Muldoon and the Government, just many vague opinions, such as: “Out of favour.” Seen by political observers as different, “There appears to be concern”; “Observers say” “Appears to fall short,” etc.
Who are these faceless, nameless people and on what foundation do they give their opinions? Also, Mr Rowling has denounced the whole statement, but what did the last Labour Government achieve with Japan? To my knowledge, absolutely nothing. At least, Mr Muldoon and the National Government are doing their best and, as Japan’s Minister of Agriculture has accepted an invitation to come here for talks, a “breakthrough” has already been achieved and improved trade will follow. — Yours, etc. C. G. MARSHALL. May 25, 1978.
