Number of doctors

Sir, — Your editorial (May 25) re-emphasises several important aspects to the “doctor-glut,” in particular that doctor-generated expenditure will increase by 50 per cent (neglecting inflation) over the next five years or so. Consequently, ancillary services such as laboratory services will have to be seriously curtailed, especially in the present economic climate. The result will be a drastic fall in the standard of New Zealand’s health services, and a nation of hypochondriacs as a bonus. The curious paradox is that the media now acknowledges this although they were instrumental in inspiring, in their relative naivete, the “need” for such an explosive increase in intake at the medical schools. The taxpayer will be the loser. — Yours, etc., J. B. WILCOX. May 25, 1978.
