Bastion Point

Sir,—lf the Government had more than just a shadow of justice, the Bastion Point occupation would not have ended in eviction. The planning of the removal must have been a bureaucrat’s dream. Weeks of shuffling paper obviously went into it. Government departments cooperated, and probably reached levels of activity never recorded, between nine and five, of course. What a waste of public money. The exercise must have cost thousands of dollars directly, and indirectly several hundred thousand more. What were those bureaucrats nor-

mally doing that did not get done? The same question could be asked of the police and Army personnel involved in the actual eviction. If only Government servants would spend their time usefully. I am reminded of a famous phrase: “All it takes for evil to prevail is good men to do nothing.”—Yours, etc., G. DAVIDSON. May 25, 1978.
