Art sale demand weak

Wellington reporter There was very little demand for New Zealand art a; the first 1978 Early and Colonial Art auction in Wellington on Friday. A number of works by such well-known artists as John Gillyn, J. C. Hoyte, W. M. Barraud, W. G. Baker, and L. W. Wilson were sold, but most were not among the artists’ best works and did not attract high prices.

Even the huge and historic oil of Otira Gorge by Petrus van der Velden had to be passed in at $4OOO. The top price of $3600 was paid for an Alfred Sharpe water-colour of the Waikato River, while $3400 was paid for a Russell Flint watercolour of Venice.

An unsigned water-colour by Frances Hodgkins, “Barges on the Seine,” sold for s2s®o.
