Woman to leave shack at Porirua rubbish tip

PA Wellington The Porirua City Council will not. have to evict a woman living at its rubbish tip. Mrs Kae Miller said last evening that she had ended her five-week stay and would go to live with her daughter. Mrs Miller, aged 67, had been living in a car-case shack at the tip. She said she slept there to protect her small waste recyling scheme from raids by vandals at night.

Last Tuesday, the council’s by-laws committee was told that Mrs Miller had been sleeping in the shack. The city engineer (Mr J. Blackman) later said that her living conditions were “horrifying” and that she wgs breaking sanitation and building regulations. On Wednesday Mr Blackman told Mrs Miller to stop sleeping at the tip. Mrs Miller said she would not leave, but on Saturday she changed her mind.

She was visited by the council's community coordinator (Mr Nolan). She said last evening that one member of her group, which runs the Porirua recycling park, would he allowed to stay inside the tip gates at night as watchman. Several members would take turns at the job and the shack would not be used as a residence. The nightwatchman would leave the tip in the mornings. Mrs Miller said.
