A double bed, custom shag-pile interior, mirrored ceiling, quadraphonic stereo . . . such are the delights of Colin Stephen’s “recreational” 1971 Bedford van (photograph above). Mr Stephen bought the van about a year ago, with the intention of using it to travel about Australia. He built iniprovements, and painted it white with black stripes. It could be used for sports activities; as it was completely self-enclosed, it was ideal for the ski-ing season, he said. Mr Stephen, who works

as a fitter, is offering his van for sale for $5BOO. “I have got some more ideas for better vans in the future. I look upon them as an art form,” he said. Other features of the van include a radio, a tinted sunroof, a burglar alarm, mag. wheels, and a fire extinguisher. Mr Stephen said he had received many inquiries about the van, but no buyer. He knows several other recreational van enthusiasts in Christchurch. A small Club had been formed, with a membership of about 30, he said.
