Hartstone, Clarke win foursomes play-off
PA Hastings Two New Zealand representative golfers, Paul Hartstone (Napier) and Geoff Clarke (St Clair), won the national amateur foursomes championship in a sudden-death play-off at the Hastings Golf Club yesterday.
Hartstone and Clarke won the title at the fourth hole; on the play-off from the two Barltrop brothers, Rodney (Miramar) and Michael! (Feilding). Both pairings finished the, 36 holes on 144 (even par) to force the first-ever play-1 off in the foursomes chain-! pionship. After the morning round, the Barltrops held first equal place with a I-under pari score of 71, with Clarke and' Hartstone three shots back.! Both combinations wre; J-under the card after the first nine holes of the second eagle at the par five tenth! by Clarke and Hartstone put widl’the^Barkro'ps 6 ' PeBg ' n6 i The Barltrops scrambled over the last two holes, but! secured pars to finish the' round with a 1-over 73 to I maintain the 1-shot lead. Hartstone drove well on! ♦he long eighteenth, and, needing a birdie to tie,; Clarke hit a magnificen’j 7-iron to within four metres from the hole. Hartstone I
i holed the putt to force the, ! play-off. Clarke won the toss and! i elected to tee off first. Uncharacteristically, he I sliced his drive into the pines flanking the right of ; the fairway and the foursomes title looked to favour I the Barltrops, who went up I the middle. Hartstone played a precision recovery shot, leaving Clarke a 120 m pitch to the !green. Michael Barltrop’s approach was too strong, but his brother Rodney, one of 'golf’s great chipping exponents, played to within a metre of the hole to secure (the half. As darkness descended the |second and third holes were both halved in par, again •hanks to Rodney’s deftness both on and around the I greens. The par-3 fourth proved I the Baritrops’s downfall iwhen they were bunkered off the tee and finished with a bogey to Clarke and HartIstone’s'par. ■ Third was the St Clair i pairing of John Finn and
i.Kim McDonald, who shot a |l-under par 71 in the afterli noon to finish on 146. Canterbury players did not fare well, reported a special : correspondent from Hast- ’ ings. The seasoned pair of Bruce Taylor and Des Tumi er performed the best, but they finished 10 shots behind . the eventual winners. Their morning round was ; a poor 79, seven shots over the card, but they improved slightly on this to record a : 75 in the afternoon. One shot behind Taylor . and Turner was the pair of i Simon Robinson and Geoff Saunders, who carded 79 and 76. Results were.— 144—M. E. Barltrop (Feilding) and R. M. Barltrop (Miramar), : 71, 73; G.
