Tikumu’s letter
Dear Children,
Do you ever have a moment in the holidays when you wonder what to do’ Here are 10 suggestions ! hope you try some.
. J' .. Bend Pipe-cleaners Into all sorts of wonderful shapes. You can make animals and your own zoo. 2. Make a miniature garden in a shallow tray wtih moss and tiny plants and twigs, or make a desert garden with sand, cacti, and cardboard palm trees.
3. Model cars and other objects from modelling clay. Leave them to dry for a few days and then give them a coat of shel’ac- Kew the clay in a P last *l so that it does not become too hard.
4. Ask your mother for her favouite icing recipe and decorate some biscuits or a cake.
5. Play sevens. Throw a ball against a wall seven times in seven different ways and catch it each time. For example, raise your right leg and throw the ball under your leg and up to the wall and catch it — seven times, think of six other ways, "lay this game on flat ground. If you miss a catch you must repeat that particular way from the beginning. 6. Draw, colour, and cut out paper dolls from cardboard. Make your own family. Draw their clothes on paper, colour them,
and cut out Make up a story about them.
7. Play shadows at night. Hang a sheet across the room. Place a strong lamp in front of it Turn off all other lights. 8. Make a puppet theatre from a large grocery carton, cutting away the top, bottom and one long side. Ask a grownup to help you. Now you have a folding-type screen with one long side and two short sides. Form a stage opening by cutting a window in the centre of the long side. Make curtains from scrap cloth and glue them to the inside of the theatre. Write your own play. Make hand pup* pets from paper bags turned upside down. Draw faces on the flat folded parts of the bags.
9. Invent secret codes for spy games. Practise mirror writing also, writing messages backwards. Form the letters very clearly. Your friend will be able to read the message when he or she holds it up to a mirror.
10. Make a picture from all sorts of odds and ends, such as straw, ribbons, corks, wool, split peas, tea. Draw a design on some stiff paper and spreacy a thin layer of glue on it. Arrange your materials over the drawing while the glue is wet. Happy holidays to you all, Tikumu.
