‘Extend runway now’
The Canterbury Chamber I of Commerce has pledged its support for any moves to ensure the extension of the runway at Christchurch Airport. The amount needed to finance the work was “chickenfeed” — an estimated; 8700,000 — compared with: the estimated S2OM cost of 1 extensions to the runway at! Wellington Airport, said Mr I R. E. Smith. He urged members to back; the Christchurch City Coun-, cil in its efforts to improve i the airport’s capabilities.
I “Let us take it up in any way we can. Let us make an issue of it. This is the time to do so,” Mr Smith said. Mr D. J. Stock said the City Council should be encouraged to extend the runway immediately as a I;means’ of attracting direct ! flights between Christchurch and the West Coast of the [United States. Direct flights (were increasingly popular, I he said. ; Christchurch should extend the runway first and [then try to "sell” it to air--1 lines, said Mr Smith.
