Winter sports injuries

Sir, — “The Press” is to be congratulated for publishing articles under this heading (May 3), together with two graphic photos. The rugby union purses its lips and utters fatuous remarks about injuries being rare, playing rugby being safer than travelling on the roads and rugby being a “bodily contact” game. It is about time those “players” throwing vicious punches and deliberately putting in the boot were summarily dealt with in tiie law courts as are the other louts whose “fields of play” are the streets and hotels. However, it is a sad commentary on our present way of life, and lack of real values, that our rugby “stars” are vociferously applauded when they manage to rough up an opposing player. To New Zealand’s principal motto. ‘‘She’ll be right,” must, alas, be added its corollary, “Win at all costs.” — Yours, etc., HARVEY FOSS. May 3, 1978.
