New yachting series

NZPA Sydney New Zealand is among 12 nations which have entered teams in a new international ocean-racing series to be held in the Hawiian Islands in August. A total of 85 yachts have already entered for the inaugural Pan Am Clipper Cup, the commodore of the Waikiki club, Mr Jack Stanford, announced at a press conference at the Cruising Yacht Club, of Australia. Commodore Stanford said that the five-race Clipper Cup series was shaping as one of the major yachting events in the world. Other competing countries include Australia, the Netherlands, Mexico, Hong Kong, Sweden, Japan, Canada, the United States, Guam and Italy. The American contingent

will include the largest fleet of “maxi yachts” ever to assemble for an international race. They will include Kialoa, Windward Passage and Ondine. The New Zealand team will comprise the top One Torr yacht Smackwater Jack (Murray Ross), and Country Boy (Clyde Colson), together with the larger yachts Monique (Jim Dowell), Ge--rontius (Graham Eder), Inca (Evan Julian) and Love Lore (Keith Anderson).

Australia will be represented by two teams — Apollo (Jack Rooklin), Ragamuffin (Sid Fisher), 8195 (Tom Stephenson), Geronimo (Geoff Lee), Streaker (Bart Ryan) and a new, as yet unnamed, Peterson-de-signed Two Ton yacht now on its way to Hawaii from California for the Sydney yachtsman, Marshal Phillips.
