Bastion Point
Sir,—Anyone acquainted with the history of the land grab in New Zealand, including the infamous Treaty of Waitangi, will sympathise with the Bastion Point protesters. New Zealanders claim to lead the world in racial justice. A careful examination of the actual land transactions during the
course of colonisation to the present day proves this claim false. It is to be hoped that the Bastion Point protesters will take their case to the Privy Council. Wakefield and the Colonial Office in the mid-nineteenth century engineered the alienation of Maori land to settlers and the Government with cynical disregard for the realities of Maori land use and the validity of Maori customary practices. No attempt, has been made to date to offer the Maori people any kind of adequate compensation for the loss of their land. — Yours, etc., B. FARRELL. April 30, 1978.
