Japanese redeem trawler
PA Wellington A huge redemption fee for the vessel, and more than $24,000 in fines imposed on crew members, were paid tn Wellington to allow the confscated Japanese craw ler Taiko Maru No. 2 to lease New Zealand. Representatives of the owners were in Wellington yesterday, and on Thursday crewmen arrived from Japan in preparation for an expected departure late yesterday. The redemption fee the owners, the Taiko Sut San Company, has to pay is being kept a close secret by all parties concerned, but is believed to be as high as $300,000. A cheque was handed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries yesterday morning and legal representatives of the company paid the lines imposed on Monday in the Magistrate's Court.
The captain was fined $20,000, the first officer $3OOO, and the boatswain, $lOOO, for trawling in New Zealand’s economic zone with a net liner.
