Begg best in rally

lan Begg, of Wyndham, drove his Mazda RX3 to a win in an incident-packed fourth round of the Mainland rallv series in the Gore district on Saturday. The rally favourite, Leo Leonard. of Timaru. got his Escort RSIBOO stuck up a bank in the fourth stage and ran out of time, although the car was undamaged. Another top-runner, Rob Gerard, of Christchurch. was lying second after two stages in his Mazda RX3 when serious motor problems put him out. Carl Rabbidge (Timaru, Mazda RX3) finished second and Ron Mackersy (Dunedin, Escort 2000) third. The fourth place-getter was Barry Robinson (Wyndham), who could have won the event had he not lost two minutes changing a tyre on the seventh and penultimate stage. Bill Pottinger (Christchurch) hit a tree head-on at 100 km/h in his Escort 1600 and the ear was badly damaged, and Wayne Murdoch (Timaru. Avenger 1600) was running well up until the seventh stage, when he took a wrong turning and lost smin. Results:
