Stowaways deported

PA Auckland Twenty-three of the 25 Tongan stowaways to Auckland in the freighter Marama were deported on Thursday afternoon by air. One of the remaining two has been remanded for a defended hearing in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland. The other, a juvenile, has failed to answer his bail. Arrangements are being made for his deportation. The Shipping and Seamen Act, under which the stowaways were charged, provides that the shipping company responsible for their carriage is liable for deportation costs.
