France denies N-bomb reports
NZPA-Reuter Paris France yesterday denied that it had tested a neutron bomb and said it had no plans to experiment with the controversial weapon. The denial, issued by President Valery Giscard D’Estaing’s office, came after press reports that France had recently exploded a neutron device underground at its nuclear test site on
Mururoa Atoll, in the South Pacific. The Presidential statement was released a week after the first report, which was later picked up by other French newspapers and widely circulated abroad. “Reports in certain organs of the press about France testing a neutron bomb are not to be taken seriously.” the Presidential statement said. “No such test has taken place, and none is planned.”
