Timaru wool sale buoyant
PA Timaru The South Canterbury wool-selling season for 197778 ended on a buoyant note at the fifth and final sale at Timaru on oMnday. Good length, sound crossbred of March shearing commanded high prices, one line selling for 230 c a kilogram. Lamb’s wool sold remarkably well; these lines were of good length and colour. Second-shear wools dipwashed before shearing were in strong demand and high prices were paid. Good crossbred of 46/50s quality made 201 c a kg compared with 197 c at the Timaru February sale. I fine-wool sale, the market was quoted as follows: Merino: firm; halfbred, barely steady; crossbred fleece, sellers’ favour; crossbred lines, skirtings, firm; second shear, up to 21 per cent dearer; oddments, sellers’ favour; first lambs’, up to 24 per cent dearer; second lambs’, up to 2j per cent dearer. The auction attracted 22,026 bales, and the bidding was animated. Competition came mainly from Europe, supported by Bradford, Japan and New Zealand mills. Wool Board activity was limited.
