N.Z. woman 3rd in bowls
PA Newcastle New Zealand’s world bowls singles champion, Elsie. Wilkie, trailed in third place after mixed success in the second and third rounds of the NJC’s women’s roundrobin singles bowls tournament in Newcastle yesterday. Mrs Wilkie won her sec-ond-round game, 31-27, against the defending champion, Vyvyan Aldridge, but went down by a similar margin to Newcastle’s Eve Wilcher yesterday afternoon. Mrs Wilcher is now the only unbeaten player after three rounds.
Mrs Wilkie is one of three players with two wins, but trails Mrs Aldridge by seven shots on a marginal countback. Victoria’s world bowls representative, Dot Jenkinson, is a further shot behind: with two wins plus nine. ' Mrs Wilkie showed complete domination in beating
I the world representative, iMerle Richardson, of Bulli, (31-20, in the opening round. I Mrs Wilkie jumped to a 7-0 lead after four ends but furthered her advantage for a 19-9 margin on the sixteenth end. Mrs Richardson fought back to score six shots on the ensuing five ends and trail, 15-22, before Mrs Wilkie again shot away for a 27-15 lead. She continued to play consistent bowls and put the result beyond doubt with another four shots on the last three ends.
