Prospecting bird ‘threat’
Wellington reporter An application by A.H.I. Minerals, Ltd, to prospect an area of land north of Barrytown on the West Coast has been withdrawn after expressions of serious concern about the impact prospecting might have on a rare species of bird, the Westland Black Petrel.
lire proposed area is the only known breeding habitat
of the bird, whose existence was unsuspected until 30 years ago. The Nature Conservation Council and the World Wildlife Fund have opposed the granting of a prospecting licence. To further protect the bird the Lands and Survey Department is now trying to buy land in the area to establish a reserve for the protection of the bird.
