Obvious result in table tennis?

By

DANID LEGGAT

A considerable amount of interest has been taken out of the A grade winter

table tennis competition, which begins tonight, by the decision of two of the three top-ranked players in Canterbury to play for Avonside I. The combined talents of Wayne Adamson, ranked second, Maurice Burrowes, ranked third, and Les Stewart, the eighth-ranked player, should ensure that Avonside I wins its fourth consecutive winter title. The competition will consist of 10 teams- one more than last winter, thereby avoiding the bye. Four Avonside teams, two Riccarton teams and Linwood. Da'lington, Selwyn and University will contest the grade. The most likely challengers to Avonside I will be Riccarton 11. Linwood and University. Three Armstrongs, the veteran John, the promising Stuart and his older brother,

Alastair, and the durable Alan Alabaster, will form the Riccarton II team. It should be a useful team, a difficult one to beat but certainly not an all-conquering one. Linwood will be led by the Canterbury coach, Ling Nan Ming. His teammates will be Michael Hamel and the former Wellington selector and coach. Gary Saunders. Saunders played for Linwood before moving to Wellington seven years ago and has already made an impact on Christchurch senior club cricket. The University team has a completely new look about it. The South Island champion. Yee Chow Boi, remains but he is joined by the Canterbury representative. Harry Redmond, sadly out of touch in the summer competition, and Richard Dixon.

This should be one of the better combinations in the grade and could well provide the odd surprise.
