Bird scarers
Sir, — Recently I had planned to spend a day at a friend’s home near Kaiapoi. Normally the setting there is quiet, peaceful, and very restful. After a very short time, a very loud bang filled the otherwise quiet atmosphere. No sooner had peace been restored, then another bang was heard. My hosts upon being asked, informed me that the source of the explosion was a bird scarer, used by the local fruit growers for approximatelv half of the year, going off every few minutes, about twelve hours a day. While I sympathise with the fruit growers, surely their profit is not worth the sanity of people living, or visiting near them and their noisy bird scarer. — Yours, etc., S. PALMER. April 20, 1978.
