Group to promote irrigation
A national association to promote irrigation and foster understanding of it among its members and also the public was set up at a meeting at Ashburton.
The decision was made almost unanimously by a meeting attended by about 200, including farmers, representatives of commercial firms, and Government departments involved in irrigation.
Mr G. R. L. Brown (Alexandra) however, said that there were already many organisations working in the interests of farming and he suggested that the aims of the proposed association might be catered for in existing organisations.
He said that every irrigation scheme or proposed scheme had a committee that could exert considerable political pressure through its local members of Parliament and he cited the Grasslands Association as an organisation that gave a good deal of attention to irrigation. Mr B. K. Cameron, a MidCanterbury farmer, was appointed the foundation president of the new association. Mr A. W. Hurst (Waimate), a former president of the Grasslands Association, was appointed vice-president.
