Casting trouble delays ‘Unite Vanya’
Casting difficulties have forced a delay in the Camterbury Repertory theatre Society’s production Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya,” directed by Jennifer Blumsky, and originally scheduled for April 29 to May 5. _ “Uncle Vanya” will now be presented from July 29 to August 5. Roles for two men and two women are still available in the cast of nine, including the important part of Astrov (played by Lord Olivier at the National Theatre and by Paul Scofield at the ' Royal Court), aman (Vanya's mother), Marina (an elderly nurse), and Yefim (a workman). Auditions for the four roles will be held in the Green Room at the theatre tonight at 7.30 p.m. Rehearsals will begin midMay. Part of the cast of “Uncle Vanya” was chosen at auditions last month. Those selected are Mervyn Glue (Professor Serebryakov), June Harvest (Yelena), Toni Glue (Sonya), Selwvn Hablett (Vanya), and Dimitri Gabara (Telyeghin). “Uncle Vanya” will be replaced as the second subscription play for members and friends by jubilee entertainment at the theatre on June 3 and 4. The programme will include scenes from Dickens, directed by Wendy de la Bere, a costume parade, arranged (“This time with a difference”) by Repertory’s wardrobe mistress, Madge Rands, and a social gathering. Elric Hooper has been engaged to direct an as yet unspecified production planned as Repertory's most ambitious project for its fiftieth anniversary year. This play will have an extended season from September 20 to 30, and its name and that of the fifth and final production for the year will be announced soon.
