No immunity for police
Floodwaters coursed through the home of the commander of the Greymouth police district (Chief Inspector B. R. Wells) in Grey mouth yesterday. Mr Wells’s Lydia Street home was in the middle of the more seriously affected area.
He was busy directing evacuation and welfare activities from the operations room of the Greymouth Police Station. Jet boats and four-wheel drive vehicles were being directed into the affected areas, when Mr Wells learned that water had gone through his own home to a depth of 18 inches.
He continued on duty, too busy to check his own home.
“That’s dedication to duty,” commented a fellow ooliceman. Mr Wells had just returned to his home last evening and was helping his family to lift a carpet when he was recalled to duty. The armed offenders squad had been called to Hokitika. Some of the other policemen, working on rescue activities, also had floodwater through their own homes.
Senior Traffic Sergeant G. W. Hames, head of the Ministry of Transport on the West Coast, who was supervising traffic in flood areas throughout the day, was confronted with flooding through his home in Greymouth when he returned last evening.
