Fiordland tales
Finding Fiordland. By Florence Preston. Reed. 80 pp. $4.95. Florence Preston has wisely chosen to introduce readers to the attractions of Fiordland not by a systematic description of those attractions, but by anecdotal accounts of trips she has made during several years in the area, including, unusually, a walk from the head of Lake Hauroko to Dusky Sound. Mingled with informal accounts of her experiences are snatches of history and natural history. The book gives a good taste of what can be expected of Fiordland whether the visitor travels by boat, plane, car or bus or on his or her own feet. It is, regrettably, marred by inadequate maps and mediocre pictures made worse by poor reproduction on the two colour pages. These are, presumably, the prices that have to be paid for a relatively cheap book. —• JOHN WILSON.
