Editorial 'astray’
“As a practising Catholic, I have never, at any time, been advised or directed by any member of the Catholic clergy in any way as to how I should carry out my Parliamentary duties,” says Mr B. S. Lambert, member of Parliament for Western Hutt, in a letter to the editor of “The Press." Mr Lambert was commenting on the leading article in “The Press” 01 March 4 which sa'd: “The demands made on Roman Catholic members of Parliament by their Church on the emotive issue of abortion justify, in our view, our unprecedented inquiry into
f-e religious affiliations of members. “I state most emphatically that there is no such domination by the Church of members of Parliament who are its adherents. I recall a conversation which I had with my own parish priest in Lower Hutt. Father Patrick Carmody. Talking about the forthcoming debate, he said to me: ‘You know, Bill, we have our own moral standards, but we have no right to impose them on the rest of society “From my personal experience, I would say that your editorial has no foundation in fact whatever ..
