Folk-lore research
Radio New Zealand has given $5OO to the Christchurch Folk-lore Society in recognition of the work the society has done in research into folk-lore in this country. The presentation fund comes from the Hoso Bunka Award, won by Radio New Zealand for its musical documentary, “Landfall New Zealand,” at the Conference of the Asian and Pacific Broadcasting Union last year. The programme’s theme was music of early European settlers. The Christchurch folk researcher and singer, Phil Garland, was commissioned to compile the programme, produced in Christchurch . Garland and another Christchurch folk singer, Christine Smith, sang the songs, with the Canterbury Crutchings Bush and Ceilidh Band. The programme was broadcast on Waitangi Day, 1977.
