Fish killed by spray?

More than 100 fish in the Wairarapa Stream last month may have died because of a moss-killing chemical used on houses in the vicinity of Ham and Aorangi Roads.

Roofs had also been sprayed more than a week before the fish kill, and the chemical could have been washed into the water by heavy rain, according' to a Christchurch Drainage Board report. The chemical used would have been “extremely toxic” to fish, but it was not possible to pinpoint the cause, since the board had sprayed Wai-iti Stream banks earlier in the month, and some Waimairi County Council spraying had been done in the area of Garden Road. Contamination from those sources was consid* ered less likely, since that spraying would be less harmful to fish.
