‘Media Women’ call for work
PA Wellington | A “Media Women’’ seminar in Wellington has decided to|: push for (7 ore part-time jobs in journalism. The convener .of the ; organisation, Cathy Strong, said that news media unions
had traditionally opposed part-time workers. Media Women realised that these workers sometimes threatened the security of full-time workers, both men and women, she said. However, part-time jobs were the only way to provide opportunities for professional journalists who “also happen to have child-rearing responsibilities.”
The women will seek controls on part-time jobs, so that full-time positions are not jeopardised and part-time workers not exploited. Ms Strong said one of the observations made at the week-end seminar, attended; by 65 women, was that female journalists were often at a disadvantage because people saw them as “girls’ ' rather than as reporters.
“Many of the women said that interviewees often expressed surprise when a good-looking woman was, [also able to be a competent journalist," she said.
