NZPA-Reuter Ottawa The pre-election Budget of the Canadian Finance Minister (Mr Jean Chretien) fell flat yesterday as the Government disclosed that the unemployment rate was climbing. Mr Chretien announced to a nationally-televised session a Parliament a Budget of $Can46,9OOM, featuring a $CanBOOM temporary salestax cut to boost consumer spending and breathe new life into the faltering economy.
But the conservative Budget failed to impress foreign-exchange markets, where the Canadian dollar settled to a new low and was trading at USB7.4c.
The Budget caused an upraor among workers’ representatives, the 2.2 millionmember Canadian Labour Congress condemning it as “a cynical election ploy designed to do more for Liberal Party election fortunes than for the one million unemployed who were counting on some real measures to get the economy moving again.”
