Blight, happy Beethoven
By C. FOSTER BROWNE A large audience at the Arts Centre yesterday afternoon waa given a light-! hearted performance of two works by Beethoven. Elizabeth Heliawell. accompanied; by Dobbs Franks, Ruth Pear., and Michael Haber, >ang five Scottish songs, in German, a more easily, understandable language. The accompaniments, very; well played, had no authentic atmosphere, and were nothing much as music, but } clear and had dynamic quality. Beethoven had printed was and cello, Op. 1 No.l. ana ing what a new breath of life was coming into the j music of his day. The performance was exactly what the work needed, bright a.nd happy qualities of tone, and snap and grip in attack Ruth Pearl, Michael Haber, and Dobbs Franks played with exhilaration, carrying the audience with them in the sunshine and dewy sparkle which Beethoven had The use of the scherzo in the planning of the work; was something which Beethoven was later to make had rhe uninhibited joy and streneth in kicking up of ’hei heels There was crystalline ahould have been greeted
