Manger given 'Winged Wheel’
New Zealand's fivetimes world speedway champion, Ivan Mauger, added another trophy to his list of awards when he became the permanent owner of the “Winged Wheel” world-champion-ship trophy, reports the N.Z.P.A. from London. The trophy, which 38-year-old Mauger called “the Davis Cup of speedway,” was given to the New Zealander by Mirror Group Newspapers, which has sponsored the world championship since the trophy was first awarded in 1958.
The trophy is a full sized speedway bike wheel, with a solid silverwinged globe as its hub. It cost 250 to have made and is now valued at many thousands of pounds. Mauger is the current holder. He has won it five times, including a record three consecutive years in 1968, 1969, and 1970. With the sponsorship of the world championship now changing to include the German car manufacturer, Volkswagen, a new trophy has been designed to supercede the “Winged Wheel.”
Along with the goldplated bike presented to Mauger after he won the championship for the third time, the trophy will eventually go to the Christchurch Museum. “It’s a real honour,” said Mauger. “I’m the only person to have won it five times so they thought I should have it permanently.” The trophy also bears the names of two other New Zealand speedway riders; Barry Briggs and Ronnie Moore.
Mauger said that he had no thoughts of retirement.
“There are lots of people who’d like to see me bow out but I think I’ll be around for a while yet.”
