Irish bid for Aintree
NZPA-Reuter London Aintree Racecourse, home of the Grand National steeplechase, has another potential buyer. A syndicate of four Northern Ireland businessmen plans to buy the famous racecourse which is up for sale at £2,500,000 <54,750,000). “The price is no problem,” a member of the syndicate said.
The Japanese tycoon "Roeky” Aoki last week said he was bidding for the course, but the syndicate members said: "We are told that the Japanese has not bid. We are going to bid. It’s all set up.” The syndicate members said they would preserve the Grand National, which was first run at Aintree in 1839. The course is in the hands of the official receiver, in bankruptcy. It was advertised for sale in the British racing paper, “Sporting Life,” on April 3.
