Local archives

Sir, — Your editorial backing of local archives preservation is most welcome, but it overlooks the central point of keeping archives. The key to archives preservation is an efficient

programme of records management, The most important reason for keeping archives is the role they play in providing continuity and precedent in policy-making and smooth administration ■in any organisation. Cultural and educational reasons like historical research for keeping archives should follow from this administrative function out of a records management pr tgramme, not the reverse. The urgent need is Government provision of trained, professional help for records staff to ensure that only useful archives are preserved and current records of no permanent historical value are regularly purged to avoid waste of storage. Such a programme demands expertise, and therefore money, but will save administrators much more money in the long term. — Yours, etc., G. A. CLOVER, National Councillor, Archives and Records Asso- ’ ciation of N.Z. April 11, 1978.
