Cardiologist dead

A noted pioneer Christchurch cardiologist, Dr Malcolm Kennedy Gray, died recently. He was 79. Dr Gray worked with the founder of cardiology, Sir James McKenzie at St Andrews University, Scotland, in 1924. Dr Gray was born in Nelson. He was educated at Richmond School, Nelson College, and Otago Boys’ High School, finishing his education in Dunedin when his father, a Baptist clergyman. moved there with his family. At the age of 18, Dr Gray became an Associate of the Trinity College of Music, London, and won a gold medal After qualifying from the Otago University Medical School in Dunedin, Dr Gray

served at the Trentham Army hospital. In 1924 he went to Britain, where Sir John Parkinson, a London cardiologist, sent him to work for Sir James McKenzie. In 1925 Dr Gray became a resident officer at Queen Mary’s Hospital at Stratford-upon-Avon. In 1927 he returned to New Zealand and founded the cardiological division at the Christchurch Hospital, having become a member of the Royal College of Physicians, London. Dr Gray was later to be one of only three persons in Christchurch to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. In 1939, Dr Gray founded the Australasian Royal College of Physicians and later

became a Fellow of that col-1 lege. )-Ie served in the Middle; East and Italy between 1941 and 1944 where he was ini charge of the medical divi-i sion of the 2nd New Zealand! General Hospital which was : first based in Cairo, and I later in Italy. Dr Gray was a senior I physician and cardiologist at! the Christchurch Hospital I until his retirement. 15' years ago, as sub-dean, of, the Christchurch Hospital I Medical Faculty. Dr Gray played golf at the; Shirley club, and bowls at the Fendalton club, and was a foundation member of the; Christchurch Tin Hat Club. : He is survived by his | wife, a son, and two daugh-j ters. j
