N.Z. goods sink

PA Wellington Several thousand tonnes of New Zealand cargo, mainly wool, destined for the Persian Gulf, is now at the bottom of the sea off the West Australian coast. It was on board the 9500tonne Greek-owned ship Maira, which sank near Geraldton, 350 km north of Perth on Monday, after an explosion and fire in the engine room.

The Maira, whose passengers and crew were picked up safely was built last year and was under charter to Gulf Shipping Lines, of London.

On her first visit to New Zealand just before Easter she called at Lyttelton, Napier and Tauranga to load general cargo, and left New Zealand on March 23. <
