Teachers’ salary claims
Sir, — It is time that. Alan Bunn, his colleagues, and all other members of the workforce began to face facts. New Zealand is in an economic recession and the sooner people realise this and stop demanding higher wages, the sooner the situation will improve. Of course there are injustices, such as the soldier of two years experience receiving more money than a 26-year-old teacher. But may I point out that there are far graver injustices in our society, such as the thousands of unemployed people who would be grateful for a decent income at all, without complaining for more money. Teachers are, in the main, intelligent, educated people. They are also well respected in our community. They should therefore be urged to drop their claims for higher pay, and show the way to other New Zealanders as tn how to recover from these financially hard times. — Yours, etc., (Miss) ALLISON D. C. FRANKLIN. April 10, 1978.
