More N.Z. drama on radio
Radio New Zealand achieved a 75 per cent New Zealand content in its drama broadcast in the last year, the chief producer (Mr Antony Groser) told the drama department’s annual conference in Wellington. He said that of 135 plays produced. 79 had been by New Zealand writers. Production of short stories and special projects had also increased. One of the biggest advances was in commercial productions; four series were sold to Australia.
Radio New Zealand continues to be a major employer of actois and actresses, and training for radio tama will continue. Two short-story competitions were arranged, one for secondary-school students and one open to all comers. This drew more than 1000 entries. The future objectives of Radio New Zealand drama include encouragement of experimental writing for radio, development of comedy writing, and special plays for concert and national programme audiences.
